It has a good reputation among both parents and children, scout troops have waiting lists for new members in many places, and employers look for scouting experience on resumes. How did the scouting movement come about? What battles did it have to fight? What can it inspire? How does it respond to the social challenges of the future?

“The purpose of the Scout Institute is to connect people. Our ambition is to create a space where scouting meets the public, where current topics are addressed, and where scouting can be inspiring for the public,” Říha said, adding: “Scouting is interesting because it is an organization tied to values and operates in all regions of the Czech Republic, including those referred to as excluded.”

The effort to help and take responsibility is just one of the qualities children gain in scouting. The main goal is for children to learn spontaneously by trying out various tasks themselves. “The role of adults is to create the safest possible environment, whether psychological or physical, while also creating a space where children can try out as many things as possible firsthand,” he explains.

“Scouting should lead people to live a successful, fulfilling life, so that they can feel meaning in it.”
