“The worst thing that happened to us in the education system was that it planted a fear of making mistakes in us. Before that, learning was fun and fascinating, and we grew. Then the education system came,” says Jiří Charvát. Yet making mistakes is not something we should fear; on the contrary, it’s how we learn.
Other obstacles that prevent us from fully developing include setting unnecessarily high goals or having a fixed idea that our ideas will be rejected. This often keeps us grounded with our ideas and sometimes we don’t even say them out loud. Meanwhile, “the best things come from the dumbest ideas,” explains Charvát.
We’re all really in the same boat. The thought “everyone else seems to know what they’re doing, only I don’t” is universal, according to Charvát and Venclík. “Everyone’s making it up as they go. No one really knows what they’re doing, and that’s exactly how it should be,” the speakers reassured. And if we accept that, improvisation won’t be a problem for us.
Who are the guests?
Jiří Charvát
I led a team of copywriters. Then I smoked a hallucinogenic toad, realized I don’t exist, and that reality is just an amusement park where I can experience whatever I want.
Now at the School of Improvisation, I help people reconnect with their spontaneity and write what I believe will bring them relief. Humor, stories, poetry, and mind-ups: smart comedic lectures that aim to deliver catharsis through tears of laughter: “Oh, I’m not alone in this?!” and help tackle life by embracing bittersweet melancholy. I wrote the books Eskejp: On the run from the office based on a blog nominated for the Magnesia Litera award, Qejci: Existential sperm comic, and the poetry collection Zase je dneska. I am a two-time Czech slam poetry champion.
Lukáš Venclík
I write and speak publicly, often off the cuff. I’ve been performing improvisational shows in Czech for 16 years – with Just! Impro at Prague’s Švanda Theatre – and in English – in Bremen, Krakow, Bern, and Paris. Within the School of Improvisation, I’ve taught dozens of workshops focused on collaboration, breaking stereotypes, and storytelling.
