“Up to 45% of women have their own birth experience that can be classified as postpartum trauma,” says Lenka in the interview. Why is there still not a single birth center in our country? What exactly is birth in a broader sense, and why does society often perceive it only through a techno-industrial lens? Why do we still approach birth as a pathological process that can generally only be survived with medical intervention? “The introduction of modern medical care into obstetrics dates back only to the beginning of the 20th century. Before that, for thousands of years, women were accompanied by other women. Today, the last generation of people born at home in our country is dying out, along with the last generation of midwives who helped bring children into the world naturally within the community,” says Lenka Laubrová Žirovnická in our interview.
