Jiří Sekera, a member of the Red Button network, talks about the book.

on poverty, education, populism and other challenges facing Czech society

An expanded edition of a successful sociological probe into Czech society. Essential reading for understanding Czech society, the crisis of democracy, and the workings of contemporary politics. Political debates in the Czech Republic often boil down to the actions and statements of a few politicians, value introspection, and the cultural wars between liberals and conservatives. However, the issues that affect quality of life in the Czech Republic—and thus trust in democracy—seem to remain in our blind spots. Especially at a time when political campaigns are driven more by emotions than facts, misinformation spreads through the media, and society focuses on tabloid scandals involving its leaders instead of addressing problems like the future of work or the shape of education. In the book Slepé skvrny, sociologist Daniel Prokop examines the problems and challenges facing today’s Czech Republic and the world. Unresolved poverty and debt enforcement, unequal education and limited life opportunities, the rise of populism and the inability to respond to it, myths about public opinion overshadowing reality—all of these are linked to declining trust of Czechs in democracy and its viability in an increasingly complex reality.
