In his “Lecture from the heart,” Dr. Pirk doesn’t just talk about cardiovascular diseases — he also prepared a discussion about (dis)emotions, and in the following debate, the conversation turned to the complexity of heart valve surgery, biocompatible hearts, and other medical marvels.

What was covered in the lecture?

  • What does a human chest look like without a heart?04:47
  • Which sport the professor recommends to practically everyone, especially if you’ve never exercised before27:32
  • An honest and surprising opinion on Ph.D. studies you wouldn’t expect from a professor51:36
  • The strangest requests from patients just before heart surgery – 01:39:01

Who is Jan Pirk?

Professor Jan Pirk, even at 70 years old, remains one of the brightest stars of the Czech medical scene. His name is most often associated with terms like “heart transplantation,” “artificial heart” (more precisely mechanical heart support), and “ischemic heart disease.” Dr. Pirk chose IKEM, the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine, as his workplace, where he became head of the cardiology center. His first heart transplant took place in 1991.

In his personal life, MUDr. Jan Pirk loves running and often participates in events like half marathons and the Jizerská padesátka cross-country ski race. He is also known for his passion for vintage cars and good wine.
