In the lecture “What one person can do,” we got a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the show Honest Guide and learned what was behind some of its most successful episodes. In some of them, Janek Rubeš took on currency exchangers, street vendors, love locks, while in others he accidentally overloaded the paternoster at Prague City Hall or a certain Prague lamp. :-)
What was covered in the lecture?
- How many millions a year it costs to recommend Prague to go to KFC – 03:35
- How to significantly make life easier (at least the afterlife) for St. John of Nepomuk – 21:24
- Which video got Janek threatened with death the most (and it wasn’t taxi drivers or currency exchangers) – 27:12
- What annoys Janek (and what shocks him) about Prague mayor Zdeněk Hřib’s approach – 55:20
Who is Janek Rubeš?
Janek Rubeš began his career as a creator in 2006, when he was making viral videos. He connected part of his life with the newly emerging Stream TV, for which he produced shows like Praha vs. prachy, Město podvodů?, and Život v luxusu. In 2018, Janek joined the editorial team of the Seznam Zprávy project, where he still works today. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Křišťálová lupa and Novinářská křepelka honors, for his contributions to investigative journalism and courage in exposing tourist traps.
Janek’s most well-known work is undoubtedly the show Honest Guide, an honest video guide where he introduces restaurants, interesting tourist spots, and generally unconventional places that don’t usually appear in tourist guides. Within this show, he has also repeatedly warned tourists about “not exactly fraudulent, but shady” currency exchangers and other tourist traps that unsuspecting visitors from abroad might encounter in Prague. But it didn’t stop at Prague — for example, there are episodes about Brno, New York, Helsinki, and Kyiv, and in one episode Janek even visited Chernobyl.
