Jiří Kryštof Jarmar, co-host of the Brain We Are podcast, talks about the book.

The Ape that Understood the Universe tells the story of the strangest animal on earth: humans. It begins with the question: How would an alien scientist view our species? What would they think about our sexual differences, our sexual behavior, our altruistic tendencies, and our culture?
The book addresses these questions based on two main schools of thought: evolutionary psychology and cultural evolutionary theory.
The fundamental assumption is that humans are animals and, like all animals, we evolved to pass on our genes. At some point, however, we also developed the capacity for culture – and from that moment, culture itself began to evolve. This transformed us from mere apes into apes capable of reshaping the planet, traveling to other worlds, and understanding the vast universe of which we are only a small, fleeting part.
