With the term European elections just around the corner, today we also touched a bit on politics. What do young people actually consider their home? Is it the city, the region where they live, or the Czech Republic, Europe, the Earth? Are the elections to the European Parliament as important to the younger generation as domestic elections?

“I was actually born into the European Union, but you decided and voted in the referendum whether to join or not. So what were the 'selling' arguments for joining back then?” asks Anička in the latest episode of the intergenerational podcast Boomer/Zoomer Tie-break.

“I first voted in the autumn of 2018 for the Chamber of Deputies. And back then I voted for the Pirates.” Why? “Well, they just seemed like a cool party to me… and for young people, that was all there was to it,” says Anička. “I wanted to vote for a liberal party. But now even Ivan Bartoš has aged a bit, dreadlocks have kind of lost their charm :). There are probably stronger issues now than cannabis legalization.”

And what are the key issues for you? “Hmmm… housing, support for young families, also part-time jobs. What happened with DPP and DPČ is terrible. And finally, we should just get marriage equality done. We’ll keep coming back to it anyway, and it will eventually be approved. There’s no need to keep listening to the awful statements from some politicians,” Anna says in our interview.

Who is an inspiring politician for you, either globally or at home? “Wow, interesting question… I don’t really think of politicians as people who should inspire me. I tolerate them, accept that they’re there, and if they don’t mess up, that’s basically fine. Among European politicians, I think Donald Tusk and even Rishi Sunak do quite well.”

I don’t really talk about politics with friends. At the pub, we mostly just joke that we won’t even have pensions,” says Anička. “Maybe I’d get involved in politics someday, it seems natural to me, but the price for that seems too high right now.”
