Sustainability

The terms sustainability and ecology are appearing more and more often in everyday conversations. They are often considered synonyms. Mistakenly. So what does sustainability mean, what is ecology, and what is the difference between them?

Sustainability is a concept that defines development as an activity covering current ecological, social, and economic needs without compromising the ability to meet the needs of future generations.

Ecology is a scientific discipline focused on describing and analyzing the relationships between organisms and their environment. It can therefore be said that sustainability is an ideology and ecology is a science.

The Iroquois tribe once urged people to care for the welfare of the seventh generation to come as they would for their own. (The Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy states: “In all our deliberations, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”).

Sustainability rests on three pillars:

Environmental protection – the environmental protection pillar is based on ecological integrity. This means maintaining a balance between the consumption of natural resources and the rate of their renewal.

Social equity – the social equity pillar is built on solidarity among communities and nations, ensuring sufficient equality in living conditions, health, and education.

Economic viability – the economic pillar within the sustainability concept focuses on generating wealth and economic growth for all without harming nature or restricting human rights.

On our learning path, we will explore the fundamental aspects of sustainability.
