The term bullying comes from French and originally referred to — which might surprise many — malicious bureaucratic harassment, nitpicking on the wording of regulations, and overwhelming unfortunate individuals with a flood of unnecessary forms and stamps. Although this form of bullying still exists, today the term covers a wide range of unpleasant phenomena, such as school bullying (against both children and teachers), workplace bullying, or bullying in society in general. A relatively new “discovery” in this field is online bullying, which, along with other forms of digital abuse, is known as cyberbullying.
What was covered in the lecture?
- How to spot warning signs that a child might be a victim of bullying, while there’s still time – 08:12
- Why it is almost impossible for teachers to address bullying (and how we are partly to blame) – 12:55
- What we must not allow if we want any hope of preventing cyberbullying – 18:21
- What he would recommend to all parents (and many of them really don’t want to hear it) – 40:34
Who is Miloslav Čedík?
Miloslav Čedík is a very dynamic expert not only on bullying but also works broadly as a special education teacher, supervisor, psychotherapist, and etoped (just to see if you know what that means ;-)). Besides his private practice and bullying prevention at elementary schools, you can meet him, for example, at Charles University, where he lectures on psychotherapy, or at the Department of Criminology at the Police Academy of the Czech Republic. Few people know, however, that Miloslav Čedík is also the president of the Gastrotherapeutic Society, which promotes the idea that good food and drink can be a remedy for a whole range of (not only) mental health issues. :-)
