Eva Pavlíková talks about the book.

A sociological expedition into the heart of one’s own country.
The events of recent months have turned much of what we know upside down, but the feeling of disorientation is misplaced. Social upheavals also offer us new perspectives on the world around us. The book Neznámá společnost by sociologist Pavel Pospěch opens these perspectives and shows how we can use them to understand contemporary Czech society. It draws on sociological surveys, historical studies, and philosophy, and isn’t afraid to ask seemingly trivial questions and seek answers in unexpected places. Why do so many Czechs have their own swimming pool? Why do we all long to be ourselves? Why do we still tell jokes about banana queues? And why can’t we agree on basic facts about the COVID-19 pandemic? In Neznámá společnost, the reader becomes a stranger in their own country. Realities that once made sense and seemed indisputable suddenly start to seem suspicious — and conversely, apparent historical coincidences and anomalies suddenly begin to make sense.
